The new Italian seismic hazard model (MPS19)

چکیده

We describe the main structure and outcomes of new probabilistic seismic hazard model for Italy, MPS19 [Modello di Pericolosità Sismica, 2019]. Besides to outline framework adopted, multitude data that have been made available after preparation previous MPS04, set earthquake rate ground motion models used, we give particular emphasis novelties modeling outcomes. Specifically, (i) introduce a novel approach estimate visualize epistemic uncertainty over whole country; (ii) assign weights each components (earthquake models) according quantitative testing phase structured experts’ elicitation sessions; (iii) test (retrospectively) with horizontal peak acceleration observed in last decades, macroseismic intensities centuries; (iv) pioneering build MPS19_cluster, which accounts effect earthquakes removed by declustering. Finally, make interpretation easier wide range possible stakeholders, represent final result also terms probability exceed 0.15 g 50 years.

Beyond EC8: the new Italian seismic code

The 2002 Molise earthquake, which was defined by seismologists as a normal event in the geodynamics of the Italian peninsula but had an international resonance due to the collapse of a primary school, triggered a series of research initiatives in earthquake engineering and significant modifications to building codes in Italy. The modifications were completed at the beginning of 2008 with the re...

Slow deformation and lower seismic hazard at the new madrid seismic zone

Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements across the New Madrid seismic zone (NMSZ) in the central United States show little, if any, motion. These data are consistent with platewide continuous GPS data away from the NMSZ, which show no motion within uncertainties. Both these data and the frequency-magnitude relation for seismicity imply that had the largest shocks in the series of earthquak...

A new probabilistic seismic hazard assessment for greater Tokyo.

Tokyo and its outlying cities are home to one-quarter of Japan's 127 million people. Highly destructive earthquakes struck the capital in 1703, 1855 and 1923, the last of which took 105,000 lives. Fuelled by greater Tokyo's rich seismological record, but challenged by its magnificent complexity, our joint Japanese-US group carried out a new study of the capital's earthquake hazards. We used the...

Poisson model for earthquake frequency uncertainties in seismic hazard analysis

Frequency-magnitude distributions, and their associated uncertainties, are of key importance in statistical seismology. When fitting these distributions , the assumption of Gaussian residuals is invalid since event numbers are both discrete and of unequal variance. In general, the observed number in any given magnitude range is described by a binomial distribution which, given a large total num...
